--- title: Renaming assets, folders, and Collages slug: renaming-and-descriptions category: managing-assets tags: rename, description, folders, collages, metadata summary: How to rename an asset, folder, or Collage — and where to edit descriptions — across all three object types. updated: 2026-07-07 url: https://support.collage.inc/articles/renaming-and-descriptions --- # Renaming assets, folders, and Collages Clear names keep your library easy to navigate. Collage lets you rename all three object types — assets, folders, and Collages — and edit descriptions where they apply. Each type uses a slightly different path. ## Rename an asset 1. Double-click the asset name to make it editable. 2. Type the new name and press **Enter** (or click outside the field) to save. > Warning: The characters `\ / : ? * " < >` are blocked by validation in asset names. Trying to save a name that contains one returns an error. ### Edit an asset's description An asset's description is edited separately, on the **Asset Info** tab of the asset detail page, where you can record usage notes, licensing terms, or campaign context. ## Rename a folder 1. Open the folder's option menu and choose **Edit**. 2. Update the **Folder Name** and, if you like, add or edit the **Folder Description**. 3. Click **Save**. ## Rename a Collage 1. Open the Collage's option menu and choose **Edit**. This same **Edit** action is available across the Mosaic, Grid, and List views. 2. Change the **Collage Name** and, if you like, add or update the **Description**. 3. Click **Save**.
